Congratulations to attorneys Jenni Frere Volk, J.D.
(of The Volk Law Firm PLLC) and Ford Clary, J.D., LL.M.
for introducing the Wills for Heroes program to Washington State
in 2006. The Wills for Heroes program is designed to provide free
estate planning services to “first responders” in Washington,
including fire fighters and police officers. The Young Lawyers
Division of the Washington State Bar Association oversees and
sponsors the
program.
Wills for Heroes was started in 2001 by Anthony Hayes, a
partner at Nelson Mullins Riley and Scarborough, LLP, in
Columbia, South Carolina. The program was inspired by the events of 9/11
- for more information, please see
http://www.willsforheroes.org/. Wills for Heroes
has been successful in South Carolina, Arizona and elsewhere.
The Washington program began in the Seattle area and there are
plans to expand the program into all counties of Washington in
the near future.
After just two clinics in 2006, Wills for Heroes served 50
fire fighters and police officers and drafted over 150 estate
planning documents in King County. Twelve volunteer attorneys
and over 30 law clerks and other staff members contributed their
time, energy and expertise during the first year of the program.
In 2007, the program has grown even more popular, and on
September 22, 2007, we expect to see our largest turnout to
date.
This year the program will host three clinics in Washington
state. We will offer our first clinic in eastern
Washington on May 12 in Yakima.
Volunteer attorneys are needed to help all interested “first
responders” to establish a basic estate plan. If you are
interested in volunteering for Wills for Heroes in Washington, please contact Jenni Frere Volk at
jenni@volklawfirm.com or Ford Clary at
